Since elementary school, we were taught Thanksgiving to be a national holiday of turkey, football, and much needed family time. However, throughout the past few years, the Thanksgiving weekend holiday has now been consumed by capital greed and retail sales. While many news reports have broadcasted the dangers and hostility of Black Friday and consumer spending, American retail stores are finally taking a stand as they plan to boycott the biggest shopping day of the year.

For years, retail stores have been opening up earlier and earlier for the notorious Black Friday shopping. Black Friday (as well as Early Bird Thursday and Cyber Monday) is the day following Thanksgiving where retail stories (and their websites) offer terrific deals and discounts for various products and services. During this weekend spending spree extravaganza, retail stores claim this time to be the biggest shopping weekend of the year with 2014 seeing $50.9 billion dollars spent during those four day. As the tradition continued and evolved throughout the years with more accessible deals and customer purchase perks, many stores, as well as the media, have now started to claim that the spending spree weekend has gotten out of control.
Because of these problems, many stores have decided to boycott Black Friday and close their stores for the weekend. One of the biggest leaders for this cause is the privately held American retail corporation organization for outdoors recreational gear, sporting goods, and clothing, REI (Recreational Equipment Inc). Jerry Strizke, the president and CEO of REI stated that “We think that Black Friday has gotten out of hand and so we are choosing to invest in helping people get outside with loved ones this holiday season over spending it in the aisles.” For Black Friday weekend, Strizke is said to close its distribution centers and all 143 of its stories to give the holiday back to the employees and their families.
Like REI, many retail stories are looking to give the day off to their employees rather than work. For years, many stories have opened at the crack of dawn just to stay open to midnight in hopes to lure diehard deal hunters. These aggressive hours and hostile customers have taken a toll on many stories that the only way to stop the madness is to close show for the Black Friday weekend.
With this unanimous agreement, dozen of national retailers have stated that they will not open Thanksgiving weekend. Companies like Nordstrom, GameStop, and T.J. Maxx have all claimed to close their doors for Turkey Day and give their employees the well-deserved rest and family time that they need. In addition, the ‘Boycott Black Friday’ Facebook page has gotten a vast amount of support from retail stores and the American public alike. These stores include: Academy Sports and Outdoors, A.C. Moore, American Girl, Barnes & Noble, Bed, Bath & Beyond, BJ’s, Bloomingdale’s, Burlington Coat Factory, Costco, Crate & Barrel, Home Goods, Home Depot, Marshalls, Lowe’s, Men’s Warehouse, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sam’s Club, and much more. For them, they consider their establishment a family-friendly company and are pleased to give their associates the time off to enjoy the Thanksgiving holidays with family and friends.
As retail stores have made their stand, the attitude of the weekend holiday ultimately comes down to the consumers and whether or not they can accept bypassing low discounted sales.
